The Zebra Spiny Eel is a striking and rarely seen freshwater species, native to the slow-moving rivers and vegetated swamps of Myanmar. This long-bodied oddball is covered in distinctive zebra-like stripes and can reach up to 40 cm in length, making it a true statement fish for a large, well-maintained aquarium.

Though shy during the day, the Zebra Spiny Eel becomes more active at night, exploring the tank and occasionally interacting with its environment. They require a soft substrate and plenty of cover to burrow and feel secure. Despite their size and predatory instincts, they are peaceful toward most similarly sized tankmates.

Aquarium Setup & Compatibility

Zebra Spiny Eels need an aquarium with a soft sand substrate, where they can dig and bury themselves. Be sure to provide lots of hiding places using bogwood, rocky caves, driftwood, and PVC pipes. Leaf litter, such as Indian Almond Leaves, is also highly beneficial and helps recreate their natural environmentjust remember to replace them as they break down.

Due to their strength, especially as they grow, its important to secure all dcor directly on the aquarium base before adding substrate, to prevent shifting or collapse. A wide tank footprint is more important than height for this species.

Lighting should be low or filtered through floating plants, and a blue moonlight is ideal for observing them during their active nocturnal hours. Ensure the tank is securely coveredZebra Spiny Eels are known escape artists!

Tankmates should be peaceful and too large to be considered prey. Avoid small species like neon tetras. Suitable companions include larger rasboras, gouramis, rainbowfish, Geophagus, botiid loaches, and L-number plecos. While peaceful, Zebra Spiny Eels may eat smaller fish overnight.

They are fairly social and can be kept in groups of 5 or more, provided the tank is spacious with ample hiding spaces. Keep water movement gentle and filtration strongclean, well-oxygenated water is essential.

Feeding

Zebra Spiny Eels are carnivorous and thrive on a diet of high-quality frozen foods, such as:

• Bloodworms

• White mosquito larvae

• Vitamin-enriched brine shrimp

• Daphnia

• Finely chopped krill or Mysis shrimp for adults

They rarely accept dry foods, so a regular supply of frozen options is a must for their health and activity.
